Hello!

Today's post has two main objectives:

  • To know and use some vocabulary about action verbs.

  • To know and use some expressions to talk or write about past experiences.

So let's begin by knowing and maybe remembering some vocabulary about action verbs.

CROSSWORD

Please, complete the following crossword with vocabulary you know about action verbs, or using a dictionary if needed.

Done? All right. Now, look at the following image and compare with your answers.

LEISURE TIME ACTIVITIES

Now, let's give some context to the vocabulary. Please, take a look at the following image. Then answer the questions below.

  • Which of these activities do you do in your free time?

  • List three other activities you do in your free time.

  • What are your favorite leisure-time activities?

  • Why do people need hobbies?

As you can see, we are talking about activities or habits we do everyday at the present time. But what happens if you want to talk about activities or habits in the past?

SIMPLE PAST

Please, take a look at the following image. Then, complete the conversations below.

CONVERSATIONS

Conversation 1

A: ________ you ________ (stay) home on Saturday?

B: No, I ________ (call) my friend. We ________ (drive) to a café for lunch.

Conversation 2

A: How ________ you ________ (spend) your last birthday?

B: I ________ (have) a party. Everyone ________ (enjoy) it, but the neighbors ________ (not, like) the noise.

Conversation 3

A: What ________ you ________ (do) last night?

B: I ________ (see) a 3-D movie at the Cineplex. I ________ (love) it!

Conversation 4

A: ________ you ________ (do) anything special over the weekend?

B: Yes, I ________. I ________ (go) shopping. Unfortunately, I ________ (spend) all my money. Now I'm broke!

Conversation 5

A: ________ you ________ (go) out on Friday night?

B: No, I ________. I ________ (invite) some friends over, and I ________ (cook) dinner for them.

As you can see, the past tense of regular verbs generally just requires to add -ed endings. Since we are going to start talking about past experiences using verbs in past tense, we need to learn and practice how to pronounce those -ed endings.

PRONUNCIATION OF -ED ENDINGS

Let's watch the following video. Pay close attention to the explanation and the examples.
